This article reviews best practices for life story work with people with dementia. Life story work involves helping people record their current and past life stories for personal use or as part of their care. People living with dementia often need help communicating their stories. The article highlights the need for Life story work to be customized to the individual needs of each person. People with dementia interested in life story work did so for personal reasons such as to share memories and celebrate life’s accomplishments. Most desired professional help to write their story focused on meaningful positive events in their lives. Professionals may see life story work as therapeutic helping clients navigate through the difficulty times in life and valuable for healthcare workers understand each client as an individual. The desire to participate in life story work varied, but all agreed that it should be done in the early when elders are able to express their views and take a lead role in story creation.
